The Chileans never threatened to show their more dangerous streak, perhaps to do with the fact 3 first choice players were serving suspensions from the Group stages. Brazil, who welcomed back Kaka from his 1 match ban, didn’t put a foot wrong on their cruise to victory.

It was refreshing yesterday to hear a real technical debrief of an England football match. Of course the fact it came from the mouth of Germany manager Loew is something that is all too characteristic of England’s knock out stages history. But it was important, as it revealed the huge disparity between the English footballing nation and the rest of the world.
